She's on a roll!

Tonight we saw Natalie roll over the first time. Luckily the camera was nearby so we caught it all on film! Yay to Natalie!!! What a momentous day!

Oak Glen

After the craziness of our Kohls experience, we went to Oak Glen with my parents. That was a lot of fun and definitely not as busy. I guess everyone else was out shopping and waiting in line?

Elijah got to see some of the animals - Sheep, goats, horses, reindeer, etc. He especially had fun feeding the reindeer and giggled as they licked the corn kernals out of his hands.

For lunch, we ate at Law's Coffee Shop where we ate soup, salad, and sandwiches -- not necessarily in that order. Eliah spent some time working on an art masterpiece while waiting for his food and Natalie was having such a good time that she fell asleep in Papa's arms.

After lunch, there were some fire engines outside (which Elijah was super excited about). We had to go check them out and take some pictures by them.

We looked in all the shops. Elijah broke a dish while trying to grab at a stuffed bear, so we ended up making an extra purchase that we hadn't planned on :) We also went to Los Rios Rancho where they were having the Apple Butter Festival. Elijah threw some apples into a big container where they smashed all the apples and made fresh apple juice for us to taste. Then he peeled an apple that was to be used for making apple butter syrup (a process that takes 3 days)!

At the end of the day, we stopped for some family pictures by the pumpkins.

Black Friday

Today was offically Black Friday -- the day after Thanksgiving and probably thee biggest shopping day of the year! We've never done any shopping on this day until this year. Laura really wanted to get a KitchenAid Stand Mixer and has wanted one for a long time. They had a really good deal at Kohls so we decided that we'd go there today to get it.

They opened their doors at 4am...we however, weren't that hardcore. We went at 6am. It was a M-A-D house!!! What person in their right mind would shop so early in the morning? Oh yeah, us and about 50,000 other lunatics. But we wanted the good deal, so out we went (taking Natalie along with us and leaving Elijah with my parents). We got there at 6:15am, found the mixer, got in line at 6:30am and at 9am we finally left the store (yes, we waited in line for 2 1/2 hours to check out)! About 2 hours into our waiting I asked Laura if this was really worth it? She didn't even hesitate, "Yes!" I thought it was worth it too, but after waiting so long, I started to second guess myself. We made it out alive, so everything turned out ok. Some of the people in line were turning hostile. We'll probably think twice before we ever try to do it again. I wouldn't recommend it, especially to those who find themselves running a little short on patience. Sorry, no pictures. Oh, and we also bought some luggage while we were there...perhaps we should have looked into getting some sleeping bags and a tent too? Couldn't have hurt.

Thanksgiving Day

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. We went to my parents house to celebrate and stuff ourselves with turkey! My Grandpa and Grandma Vanderbilt and Uncle Marv also came over to indulge themselves in the festivities.

Dad carving the turkey like a pro.

Pausing for a moment before we chow down.

Elijah sticking olives on his fingers (holding to the Gutierrez tradition).

We had a lot of fun together eating and of course watching the Lions get creamed by the Packers and the Jets gets romped by the Cowboys! Dessert followed with Pumpkin, Apple, and Pecan pie (Laura made the Pecan). It was all very good...we were stuffed...but don't worry, we saved room for next year :)

Welcome, Friends!

Today we had the Bleeker family over for dinner. It was a great time of hanging out, catching up, and letting our little girls bond. Elijah was content playing by himself. He also loved talking to Kyriana and trying to tickle her ;)

Here's a picture of us eating dinner. Laura made "Cheesy Vegetable Pasta with Eggplant and Zucchini." Long Title, but yummy! While we were eating the girls bonded some more.

Laura and Kyriana enjoying a moment together.

Our kids wanted to welcome little Abraham Elijah Shupe into the world. Abraham was born on Sunday! He weighed 8 lbs 10 oz and was 22 inches long. Congratulations, Jonathan and Angela!

Last Weekend at Nana and Papa's

So, only a week late...last weekend I went to Dave's parents' with Elijah and Natalie because Dave was gone in Wichita for a conference. We had a great time! Elijah couldn't play with Nana and Papa enough!!!

Here are some pictures from our time:

Elijah in control of the ATV (thanks for sharing, Uncle Jeff!).

We bought Papa birthday cream puffs from the local bakery. They were huge and full of cream!!!

We went to the park to eat the birthday cream puffs and then Elijah got to watch the ducks.

Finally, we made it to the play equipment. Elijah tried the swings but especially loved the slides!!!

At the end of the day, we ate a yummy burrito meal, followed by baths for the kids, then Papa opened presents and finally, birthday cake! Elijah liked helping Papa blow out the birthday candles and thought it was fun to stay up extra late because of the birthday!

We wished we could have stayed longer but we're going back in only 3 days! We can't wait until Thanksgiving weekend! Elijah especially!!!

Our New Backyard

We moved into World Impact missionary housing in November 2004. Our backyard was a mess. It was green, but it was green entirely because of weeds!

Ever since we moved in, it has been my goal to have a nice backyard. Although I had tried planting grass seed myself, I never really took and the grass was spotty at best.

Three weeks ago, I finally got my wish!!! We decided it was time to put sod in our backyard. I prepped the ground, pulling out our weeds (and the "sad" grass I planted) and tilled the ground.

Then on Saturday, Oct. 20, a group from Malibu Presbyterian Church came and helped us install sod in our backyard. We love it! Now Elijah and Natalie will be able to enjoy a nice backyard to play in.
